Asher's Afternoon Bass

Time only allowed for a few casts at the end of afternoon of family play on the property of some friends, but 6-year-old Asher didn't need much time to coax a topwater strike.Asher's 4-year-old sister, Autumn, was soon beside him, encouraging him and sharing in the excitement
Asher held up his prize catch for a few quick photos... ...before scurrying down to the bank where he could release it gently and watch it swim away.

Every Which Way for White River Trout

"How else can we catch them?" Eric Naig asked White River guide Frank Saska with a hint of a laugh in his voice. We'd been catching brown and rainbow trout since leaving the dock and had caught them several different ways.

Without skipping a beat, Saska proposed still another technique, took us to a conducive bank and gave us a quick tutorial. Soon after we were both catching trout yet another way.

The fast-paced fish catching and potential for massive brown trout is part of why the Gaston's White River Resort is one of my favorite places in the world to visit. But I also love the bluff-bounded river itself, the friendly folks who run Gaston's, the amazing shore lunches, the history of the area, the realization that there could be world-record fish swimming nearby... The list could go on and on

Our biggest fish producers today were black marabou jigs. We angled Northland Bug-A-Boos downstream, and used a snap-and-drop presentation that's popular on the White River and is extremely effective.

At dinner tonight folks talked like we must have been miserable out there this morning, fishing in a pretty steady and cold rain. The truth is that Eric and I hardly noticed that it was raining. We were having too much fun catching trout!

Writing Fish Stories

Despite quite a bit of rain on last week's parade, I was able to get some good crappie photos and had a fun time catching big white crappie from the Tennessee River and the Bear Creek lakes in North Alabama. I'm traveling again next week, so I supposed I'd better get some fish stories written this week. Of course, I do need some trout photos, and the forecast looks mighty nice, so maybe just one day... We'll see.
