When Jacob Wheeler stepped up the scales in the Gwinnett Center Arena, he needed a little more than 5 pounds to surpass Scott Canterbury and take home the Forrest Wood Cup. Wheeler, who won the BLF All American last year and was a rookie on the FLW Tour this year, answered all questions immediately when he pulled his two biggest fish out of the bag and held them up for the crowd before weighing any. When all was said and done, Wheeler's four-day total of 60 pounds, 1 ounce topped the rest of the field by more than 7 pounds.
Wheeler established a commanding lead on Day 1 with a 21 pound, 15-ounce limit and led throughout the tournament. Asked at what point today he felt comfortable with his catch, he answered, "When Scott weighed in -- that was when I felt comfortable."
Wheeler, who is the youngest Forrest Wood Cup champion in history, used a big array of baits, focusing mostly on current breaks up the Chattahoochee River and on bass hanging around bluegill beds.
