Beautiful Backlighting
The normal "rule" for photography is to put the sun or other primary light source behind the photographer so the subject is well lit, and for most photos I take, that's the route I choose. I always try to take at least a few backlit shots, though, and my experience is that either I throw them away or they my favorite pictures I take that day. Unless I'm going for a silhouette, I have to use either a flash or a reflector to add light to the subject from the front, and usually the the sun has to be somewhat blocked to gain the best effect and avoid "ghosts." When everything works, as I think it did with this recent shot of bass pro Pete Ponds, the results can be really nice.
