Asher and I tried to wait for the day to warm yesterday, but late in the afternoon we determined that simply wasn't going to happen. Still, the sun was shining, and we had a bit of time on a Sunday afternoon, so we ran over to the ponds to give the bass a try.
We made one full lap around the upper pond in a canoe, casting slow-moving lures mostly to the banks. We also walked to the next pond down to make a few shoreline cast to an area where bass often lurk just beneath the surface early in the spring. We didn't mess with vertical approaches. That might have worked, but the wind was a little pushy for sitting still in the middle, and it was a bit cold for such an approach.
No takers. We fished maybe an hour and a half before Asher decided he was more interested in warming his hands than continuing to try to convince a fish a fish to bite. He was still glad we got out there -- as was I. The good news is that the upper pond, which has been very low for a long time, is filled all the way to the top. When just a bit of warmth draws the bass and bream shallow, they'll have lots of ambush position, and I expect some very fun afternoons. It won't be long now!
